My perception is bookkeeping is really unnecessarily complicated but after struggling with my accounting problems for a whileI found a very valuable shortcut that I wanted to share with you. Most managers I know in startups want to devote their time to acquiring customers and selling instead of doing bookkeeping. All organisations have to pay special attention to their accounting if they want to avoid problems.
When I first started out my bookkeeper advised or should I say insisted that I used a small business accounting software package sold by an outfit called Sage Software. I instantly went out and purchased the package without even considering if it was the right choice. On reflection I am glad I didn’t spend too much cash on this as this software is possibly the most badly designed and most disorganised software I have ever had the misfortune to use. OK my first piece of wisdom is that whenever you see the words accounting software proceed carefully as it probably means the developer ismaking the assumption you understand a great deal about accounting.
Like me I know this simply isn’t the case for the majority of small business owners and this drove me to put aside time that I didn’t really have to search for a solution to make my work easier. It was really worthwhile doing this as I found a more functional solution than I could ever of imagined named salesorder.com.
This is arguably the simplest software I have ever found and what’s more it is internet based and therefore I can use it from anywhere I want to work. Better still and the third piece of guidance I want to tell you is that the people who work at salesorder.com are not just very knowledgeable of their system but they know a significant amount about the issues of running a small business and have taught me the accounting I need to know.
